VR Stroke Rehabilitation

Kinesix | Interactive

/ THE ASK

Kinesix approached us with an early-stage VR rehabilitation prototype focused on stroke recovery. While the initial demonstration showed promise, the experience lacked clinical polish, user guidance, and intuitive design. Our goal was to elevate the platform—reworking the interface to build a more engaging, patient-friendly experience that could be confidently deployed in clinical settings.

/ THE APPROACH

  • UX & Interface Overhaul: Creating a calming user experience for populations that may experience motor or cognitive challenges post-stroke required the creation of UI that was both intuitive and accessible.
  • Therapy Mechanics Reimagined: Existing goal-based gameplay loops were restructured. These simple tasks - such as picking apples or stacking blocks - were restructured with clearer feedback loops and difficulty progression.
  • Environmental & Visual Design Refresh: Scenarios were redesigned to reduce cognitive load, while keeping patients engaged within natural, serene environments.
  • Clinician Workflow Integration: We introduced a dashboard with easy-to-use monitoring tools, allowing therapists to adjust sessions in real time and review recovery data.

/ THE RESULTS

  • Rehab-Focused Tasks: Real-world scenarios that promote gross and fine motor skills, including reach, grasp, coordination, and bilateral movement.
  • Adaptive Session Design: Difficulty scales automatically with patient performance, supporting gradual progression and reductions in frustration.
  • Clinician Dashboard: Allows for session planning, remote observation, and performance tracking - complete with usage analytics.
  • Fully Redesigned UX: Interfaces and navigation are designed from the ground up for patients recovering from stroke, ensuring comfort and clarity throughout the experience.
